B12 deficiency

It's amazing how much impact a single vitamin can have, but that's why they are called Vitamins!
Dr Joe Chandy has been a GP in Easington in County Durham, UK for 40 years. I recently attended a presentation about the impact on the body systems of subclinical B12 levels in the tissue - not recognised by medical science because the blood levels were above the minimum required.

I recently co-hosted a workshop bringing commissioners (mostly local authority and health) together with third sector (charity) providers to help each side understand how the other works.
The results were explosive!

IES talk - Business Cases for Public Good

IES (Institute for Employment Studies) does groundbreaking research into the impact of employment practice on delivery of effective public services, amongst other things (for a fuller explanation see their web site).
They run fortnightly lunchtime seminars on relevant issues and Tues 8 Oct 08 was the inaugural seminar for this academic year.
Minney.org presented on how to prepare and deliver a business case for public and statutory funding, illustrating some of the difficulties of assembling evidence, and of introducing new roles.

the problem
PCTs have a requirement to get GP practices engaged with the commissioning process, for two reasons:

  • engagement at grass-roots level, being seen to consult
  • GPs have the biggest effect on the cost of service delivery, as they are the ones making a decision early on in the patient pathway whether a patient should use the hospital (generally expensive if the treatment is appropriate for a community pathway) or alternative pathways (generally cheaper if they are available, but someone has to decide whether to set them up and if so, how to do so)

It's said that the constant exposure to air-brushed beauties in magazines and impossibly perfect people in our soap opera "true to life" stories on Television causes people to be dissatisfied with their partners and dissatisfied with their lives.

That doesn't look like the headline for a professional article!

When I seek joy and only joy, all else comes to me. I know right now that I have a lot to learn, that I've spent far too long worrying about being professional, protecting my reputation, earning money, pretending I'm seeking freedom when in reality I'm frightened to set out on my own.

It has taken a real effort of will, and a real effort of surrender, to get to this point.

So I'm not trying to do what I ought to do.
